Wellness – What Is It?

I am sure you have heard the word a lot by now as More than ever before, we hear this word in the news, on billboards, in conversation and even at work. But what exactly is Wellness?

Definition Of Wellness

The World Health Organization describes wellness as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

The word as such is the combination of “wellbeing” and “fitness” which already shows that there is more than just one dimension to Wellness.

The main dimensions of Wellness are mental and physical, even though you can find different definitions sub-dividing it into even more categories.

What is WellnessHow To Achieve Wellness

The good thing about Wellness is that each of us has the choice to improve their level of wellness.

How do we do that? By making good lifestyle choices. By looking after our mental and physical health and being proactive rather than hoping for a cure.

Things like good nutrition, weight control, exercise, controlling risk factors like smoking, alcohol and drug abuse have a big impact on your personal wellness.

Making good choices and improving your state of wellness has shown to have a positive impact on your life with a better immune system, more energy, less need to go and see the doctor. It is the best long-term health plan you can get and it will even save you money.

Since lifestyle has been found to be the single most important factor determining your pattern of general health, it is important that you be educated to “take charge” of your daily life and to set healthy lifestyle goals. The choices you make have a dominant influence on your health and wellness.

Wellness is an active process through which you become aware of and make choices toward a more successful you.

How To Improve Your Wellness

There are a lot of big and small things you can do to improve your level of wellness, and you don’t have to do them all at once. But developing these habits will be a great way to improve your life long term:

Physical

  • Cut down on sugar in your diet, especially hidden sugars in processed foods and sugary drinks.
  • Take up regular exercise. And yes, 10min walk every day with the dog or taking the stairs instead of the lift do count. Pick something you enjoy so you will continue doing it
  • Get some Me time to relax – get pampered with a massage or spa treatment, read a good book, have a sleep in. Whatever is good for you to relax and recover is the thing to do.

Mental

  • Start writing down 3-5 things that you are grateful for every evening. This is one of the most effective ways to achieve mental wellness.
  • Meet with your friends and take time for a chat, a laugh, shared pamper time at your local Spa
  • Volunteer for a good cause. Helping others is another way of improving your wellness and happiness levels

Wellness is your active choice towards a better, healthier life with higher levels of wellbeing and fitness. It is in your hands and you can start now to improve your wellness.

Wellness is a positive approach to living – an approach that emphasizes the whole person. It is the integration of the body, mind, and spirit; and the appreciation that everything you do, think, feel, and believe has an impact on your state of health.

Okay, so I definitely don’t feel well. lol It seems I have some work to do.

I love the idea of a ‘gratitude journal’ and volunteering. I always think that no matter how bad things may seem at the time; somewhere out there, someone is having a tougher time. :)

PS. Wellness for me means to be able to live pain free. :)
